Organic Shopping on the Coast
Organic. Farm-raised. Cage-free. Non-GMO. There are so many options on groceries and meals these days, it can be overwhelming. Since most grocery stores are overflowing with conventional foods, some may still wonder what’s the big deal about organic shopping. Is it healthier or just another trend? Here is the low-down on organic food.
Non-organic food can often contain harmful hormones and pesticides. Since pesticides are poison, they can cause a number of health problems for people of all ages. Companies can dispose of pesticides incorrectly, thus ending up contaminating soil and drinking water. This affects us as well as animals in their natural habitats. Since organic foods do not have artificial preservatives, the taste is often better as the product has fresh flavor. Buying organic food also supports sustainable farming which uses much less fossil energy than conventional farming methods.
These are some of the reasons people are choosing organic. But is it too expensive? It can cost more than conventional foods but the more popular they become, the more companies will try to meet the demand with competitive prices. Organic produce tends to cost more because organic farming is more labor-intensive, due in part to fewer pesticides used, and it’s expensive for farmers to maintain their organic status. But it’s all relative: a $5 carton of eggs may seem like too much when you can get one for $2 but then you don’t think twice about buying a $6 coffee every morning. When it comes to your health, the environment, and actually enjoying the original, fresh flavors, a few extra dollars is worth it to some.
When you are on your Destin vacation, where can you buy organic? Plenty of places! Whole Foods opened last year and has been a bustling store ever since. They are known for seeking out the finest natural and organic foods available, maintaining the strictest quality standards in the industry, and having an unshakeable commitment to sustainable agriculture. That would be your best one-stop-shop but we also have Publix and Winn-Dixie with nice organic selections. Publix and Whole Foods even offer grocery delivery now! Every Saturday morning in Grand Boulevard there is a Farmers Market at 9am where you can purchase fresh from the farm products as well as juices, teas, soaps, and even pet treats.
We aren’t trying to push organic living or make anyone feel guilty about how they shop. In reality, we are all always on the go and sometimes convenience is the best option. But for those coming to town that want to know their options, here you go. We want your coastal vacation to be your best yet!
