Hurricane Preparedness
Welcome to hurricane season in Destin. This is the time when you have to stay tuned in to the news to make sure you know what’s headed our way. We thought this would be a good time for reminders to prepare for hurricanes. Here are some tips from the National Hurricane Center.
Pay attention. Emergency officials will alert the area and keep you informed as to where the storm is headed and what areas are to evacuate. Listen to the radio, contact the National Weather Service, or you can follow the Emergency Management Facebook page for your county for updates. Keep a list of contact information for reference. As always, fill up the car with gas early so you don’t have to get held up waiting in a long line at the last minute.
Have a Disaster Supplies Kit ready. Recommended supplies are bottled water, 3 day supply of non-perishable food, battery-powered radio, flashlight, first aid kid, and a whistle to signal for help. Keep these items packed up but easily accessible for an emergency.
Plan your evacuation. Where will you go? What will you do with the pets? When will you return? Have all these things set so you’ll know as soon as the time comes. Recovering from a disaster is a gradual process so wait until an area is declared safe before returning.
Hopefully, we’ll never be in a situation to need these but it’s best to be prepared for the unexpected. Luxury condos and vacation homes are available year-round in Destin and 30-A areas for comfortable accommodations.
